<p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atriplex_hortensis" target="_blank">Red orach</a> is an edible green in the amaranth family.  It is also known as ruby mountain spinach, as the leaves taste like a mildly salty spinach, though it&#8217;s easier to grow and prolifically self-seeds.</p>

<p>It has beautiful purple leaves with an underside of fuscia, providing a visual feast in the garden.</p>

<p>Seeds start out fuschia, lasting for months, then slowly fade to a golden tan and are used as grains in some countries. They&#8217;d have to be husked, though, a tedious job.<img class="alignnone" title="dry red orach seeds" src="http://slowcoast.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/red_orach_seeds.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="200" /></p>
<p>I glued on some of the seed pods to give the painting a three dimensional quality, also I like the idea of having a painting that can be planted.</p>
<p>Painting is oil on canvas, with seeds.</p>
